Yours Truly (Carte Blanche Tasting Menu)

229 Ossington Ave, Toronto, ON
(Dundas & Ossington)
Tel: (416) 533-2243

I’ve only tried the Carte Blanche tasting menu, which varies daily depending on what is fresh and in season. The entire dinner lasted four hours and we were served more than 20 courses! By the end of the evening, I was waddling back to the car! The portions ranged from small bites to larger servings and more than half the items on the menu were Asian-inspired. Almost all the dishes were delicious except they spanned them too far apart in serving us and the chairs were not super-comfortable to be sitting for that long.

If you want to give this restaurant a try, I recommend you book ahead and use your AMEX (to receive a complimentary glass of champagne).

• Foie gras (served in a mini coconut cup) with nori (seaweed) wrap
• Fruit meringue
• Smoked carrots
• Bruschetta

Good to Know

• Service: Okay but slow
• Atmosphere: Hip and trendy

Yours Truly on Urbanspoon

550 Wellington Street West, Toronto, ON
(Bathurst & King)
T: (416) 601-3590

Located inside the Thompson Hotel, Scarpetta was not hard to find. The big lounge area in front of the restaurant made waiting for the rest of my party to arrive more comfortable and relaxing.

Although there are two other restaurants located in the hotel; Wabora (a Japanese restaurant) and Counter (a 24-hour diner), Scarpetta’s ratings are the highest.

• Stromboli bread – made with salami, mozzarella cheese, basil and cherry tomatoes
• Creamy Polenta with Fricasse of Truffled Mushrooms (Scarpetta’s signature dish)
• Wine (they have selections listed here that are not available elsewhere)
• Tiramisu

Good to Know
• Best seats: Preferably the booths (Wherever you sit, try not to face the windows. There is a parking lot located just across the street on Wellington and the headlights of cars coming and going could be harsh on the eyes since the restaurant is dimly lit.)
• Service: Excellent; attentive; replaced our cutlery after each use; cleaned the crumbs off the table with minimal disturbance;
• Atmosphere: Rustic; dark chocolate brown leather/upholstery and dark wood; high ceilings; acoustics wasn’t very good because it was difficult to hear my friend speak, who was just sitting on the other side of the table.
• Ideal for: Business, romantic date, celebrations
• Attire: Casual, business, trendy, smart casual
• Reservations recommended: Yes
• Patio recommended: N/A

Impress your date with this nice, elegant restaurant. The food was great and service even better!

• Prix fixe
• Crème brûlée
• Wine (they have a really good wine list)

Good to Know
• Best seats: In the cranberry red room (more privacy)
• Service: Excellent – We were well taken care of from the moment we walked in. They took our jackets, accommodated our request for quiet and sat us in a smaller private room, and was very helpful with the menu and wine list. We were dining leisurely and were one of the last ones left in the restaurant. They were very considerate and professional and did not pressure or rush us to leave.
• Atmosphere: Elegant, rich, darker, colourful (cranberry walls), fancy
• Ideal for: Date, business, more formal, parents
• Attire: Business, smart casual, dressy

Colborne’s tasting menus never disappoint. Chef Claudio Aprile does an excellent job with presentation, taste and creativity.

Chiado Restaurant

864 College Street, Toronto, ON M6H 1A3
(Ossington Ave & College St)

I felt like I was in a fine dining restaurant in Portugual when the server brought the daily seafood platter to our table. I had the option of going with the Chef’s Special or choosing one of the daily imported seafood. (If you have a preference of how you like your fish cooked, you can put a request in to the chef. I hear the chef is very accomodating.)

• Any fish or seafood entree
• Arugula and Fresh Figs Salad – with slivers of aged Lourais cheese
• Mixed Fresh Berries Dessert – a medley of raspberries, blueberries, strawberries in a chocolate meshed net

Good to Know
• Service: Our server was great. He was knowledgeable, funny and had lots of personality.
• Atmosphere: Classy decor with oil canvas paintings and gold frames around the walls of the restaurant.
• Ideal for: Business, romance, quiet dinner
• Attire: Business, smart casual
• Reservations recommended: No (it wasn’t packed the times I went, but it’s nice to call ahead)
• Patio recommended: N/A
